Outdoor and Adventure

Famous for it’s crabbing, fishing and squidding, Port Germein is definitely a place for outdoor adventure activities. Fish off the jetty, or the beach in Germein Bay, the sandbanks near the Mangroves or launch your boat. Other beachside activities include canoeing, kite surfing and swimming. Our Beaches include Germein Bay, Barrows Beach, and Telowie Beach. Further afield you’ll find Solomontown Beach in Port Pirie, Weeroona Island Boat Ramp and Mangroves, Winninowie Conservation Reserve and Chinaman’s Beach.

If walking or cycling is more your style, we have plenty to offer, from the 1.5km walk each way along the Jetty (or out on the sand flats during low tide), walks along the esplanade to the mangroves or to Telowie Creek, along with short historic walking tours in town. Cycling these walks or around town is also a good option. Further afield there are a range of longer hikes and rides in the surrounding National Parks – via Mambray Creek to Mount Remarkable to Relowie, Napperby and Nelshaby. Wirrabara, Melrose, Laura, Stone Hut and Willowie provide for longer mountain biking experiences and rail trails.

Nature abounds in our region, with a huge diversity of flora and fauna. Spot a diversity of marine life in the waters along the coast including dolphins, crabs, and fish. Search for Yellow Footed Rock Wallabies in our conservation parks and gorges, along with emus, echidnas and kangaroos. You’ll also almost always find something flowering, from orchids to eucalyptus, and different types of native edible plants in the coastal zone as well as the hinterland and mountain areas.

Further afield there are cycle trails in Port Pirie, along with the 4shore skate park. Port Augusta offers the Australian Arid Lands Botanic Gardens, Redcliff Lookout and Blanch Harbour Aquatic Reserve. Quorn is home to a number of short and long walks including at the Quorn Native Flora Reserve, Warren Gorge, Dutchman’s Stern Conservation Park and Devils Peak. Crystal Brook also offers a walking trails and Bowman Park Nature Place Space and Recreational Reserve.

Drive up through Port Germein Gorge to Wirrabara where you can access the Bluff Lookout which looks back down on Port Germein and across the Spencer Gulf, there are a number of walking and cycling trails in the new Wapma Thura National Park, along with Picnic Areas, the Old Wirrabara Forest Nursery, Mount Ellen Lookout and the King Tree. Wilmington, further to the north is close to Mount Brown hiking Trails and the famous Alligator Gorge.
